OKUDA TAMIO: HITORI CANTABILE at PARCO THEATER in SHIBUYA 2010/29/Apr. Live Report ①

When I entered the hall, OT was already on stage, busy working at his computer desk.

On your left of the stage are drums, and behind them are six amps. In the middle of the stage, there are a sofa and table. Next to the sofa and table are OT’s computer desk and chair. On your right of the stage are OT’s guitars and basses.
These settings are the reconstruction of the recording studio at OT’s home.

“I didn’t know what PARCO theater is like. The arrangement of the seats is not good. I don’t like being watched like this…”
“Pretend not to watch me, please!”
“You are very quiet. I can record a song even if you make noise, so make yourself at home!”

PARCO theater is used for performing arts like plays or dance, so OT seemed to feel that it was different from the live houses where he had done his lives. He was a little bit nervous about that.

Here starts OT’s HITORI CANTABILE now!

First, OT explains how the recording will be going. He uses a mixing application called “pro tools”, which makes it enable to do operations such as PUNCH IN, PUNCH OUT, EQUALIZING and so on with his Mac. It also enables him to balance the sounds of each instrument recorded into his Mac.

1. Drums

It was my first time to watch OT drumming live. He is really a good drummer! He played only once, and that’s it.

2. Bass

Today OT plays the bass of Epiphone, which is reportedly a fake of Gibson (I don’t know whether it is true or not). Recently he likes the taste of a little cheaper sound.

“It is OK you are talking, because I don’t use the microphones when recording the bass sound.”
OT never forgets to take care of his audience. What a nice guy he is!

The recording of the bass appeared going well, but he made a mistake in the middle.

“ I made a mistake! Where?”
Talking to himself, OT is trying to find the place looking at the bass sound wave on the Mac screen.

“Now I use a high technique called ‘PUNCH IN’.”
To PUNCH IN is to insert the new sound into the original one from where the mistake is made.

“OK, the recording of the bass is done!”

Now OT explained what he was doing now by using the screen of pro tools, but I couldn’t understand his explanation fully due to my lack of knowledge.

3. Guitars

The first one: Gibson 335 black

“This is as easy as junior high students could play. The moving of codes is also no difficult.”

After tuning, OT started playing his guitar. Then, he found something wrong with his Mac!

“Oh my God, my Mac is down! All the music has been ruined!”
“ What should I do? What a trouble I have!”

I was much surprised and wondered what happened. The trouble was that OT's Mac had suddenly frozen. OT was at a loss about the problem.

“Anyway, please take a rest, wait and see.”

The trouble seemed quite serious; OT stood still in front of his Mac, looking at the screen. I was very worried, too.

Five minutes later, some staffs came on the stage and were trying to solve the problem, but there was nothing changed.

OT could not help smiling, watching his Mac screen. It seemed that he tried to come up with a good solution to this problem. He kept standing with his arms crossed, still looking at his Mac.

Another five minutes, and here comes a sound! OT's Mac is getting back!

“OK! My Mac is alive now! I was afraid that I would have failed in this HITORI CANTABILE LIVE! Now HIROSHIMA Carps are losing their game at the score 0-8. I suspect that it was the cause of this trouble.”

OT was born and brought up in HIROSHIMA pref., and he is a big fan for the professional baseball team, HIROSHIMA Carps.

Now he resumes his recording of the first guitar.

“I can’t afford to make another mistake any more!”

The sound of the first guitar was very gentle. OT repeated the same phrase. Maybe it would become the base of the accompaniment. The rhythm was also slow and tender, and I had an impression that this really rsembled an acoustic number of The Beatles.

The second recording is going well. OT, playing the guitar, is really cool! What a beautiful movement of his left fingers when he is playing the guitar! He looks very relaxed and enjoying himself.

“Oh no, I made a mistake at the end. I lost my concentration.”

(at a very small voice) “ I’m afraid that if I talked at a large voice, My Mac's mood would go wrong.”

OT confirms whether the recording of the first guitar is done, and say
"I will go to the next guitar!"

"I'm very shocked with my Mac trouble… Don't freeze when I need you so much!"
OT scolded his Mac! He is so cute!

The second guitar: Gibson

"This is the same level as high school students could play. I use Alpegio, which is the refrain of same melodies."

"You hear a slight vibration of the guitar sound. Then I will play."

The sound of the second guitar was a little brighter and lighter than that of the first one, and it was also clear and tender.

After OT finishes recording the second guitar, he confirms whether it has been properly recorded.

"I'm very happy only because the recording was properly done!"

The third guitar: Gibson LesPaul (used in the introduction and solo parts)

"This is the most expensive guitar that I use today. I don't use it so often, but when I use it, I would like to show it off!"
